Illegal Annexation 24
Delay, Delay, Delay

For the third time now, the case of the county lawsuit against Lenoir City for their two illegal annexations has been postponed. Legal maneuvering by Lenoir City attorney, T Scott Jones has caused the delays. Of course, when there's no way to win a case, delay, delay, delay is the only option. Ultimately, the case will get to court and the city will lose. No new date has been for the next hearing.

The timeline so far.

2/15/23, The county files suit.
3/20/2023, The city answers the suit with a motion to dismiss.
11/20/2023, The judge requires the city to set a date for their motion.
2/28/2023, 1st delay with late documents from Lenoir City.
3/27/2024, 2nd delay with Lenoir City motion to amend.
4/24/2024, 3rd delay for other attorneys from previous amended motion to join the suit.

Lenoir City mayor, Tony Aikens likes to say, the county can't get to first base on the lawsuit. Well, it's hard to get to there when the city keeps moving the base. Maybe he thinks if they delay long enough, the county will give up and let him keep his illegal annexations. Never going to happen.

Who knows, after the November election, the lawsuit may not be any concern of the mayor.
