Walmart pickup towers installed at Lenoir City location

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Residents who shop at the Walmart in Lenoir City will be greeted by the store's newest feature, the Walmart Pickup Tower.

The tower, which is 10 feet tall and eight feet around, is essentially high-tech vending machines located inside the store. They store shoppers' online orders until pickup.

Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield said, "Our free pickup service is a popular way for people to save time and money. We know speed and convenience are important to our customers, and we’re always looking for new ways to bring it to them. The Pickup Tower is a great example of how we’re testing new technology and letting our customers and associates tell us what works best. We’re excited by the response to the Pickup Tower and look forward to expanding it to serve more customers.”

To use the new addition, customers choose the items they want on Walmart.com from their computer or smartphone. At checkout, they may choose the "Pickup" option.

After checking out, a bar code is sent to the shopper's smartphone. Upon arrival at the store, shoppers scan the bar code at the tower to get your order. According to Walmart, once the customer scans the code, the transaction should be completed within one minute.

There are only 120 towers around the country, and the Lenoir City location is the only one in the Knoxville market.
