Tractor driver, 81, killed in wreck in Loudon County

LOUDON - A Loudon County man who drove a farm tractor onto a road in an apparent bid to turn the machine around was killed Monday when a car struck him, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

William F. Blankenship, 81, had just finished plowing a field on a 1978 Massey Ferguson tractor when he pulled onto Caldwell Road just after 1 p.m. and was hit by a 1993 Honda Accord driven by Hiram E. Thompson of Sweetwater, according to the THP report.

Thompson, who was wearing his seat belt, was injured. His condition was not immediately known.

There were no indications of drug or alcohol use and no charges were filed, according to the report.
