Teen charged with aggravated assault

A Lenoir City teenager was charged with aggravated assault following a Thursday domestic dispute.

Lenoir City Police Officer Ethan Carroll talked with a woman at an apartment in Lenoir City who said Michael Gage Smallen, 18, had become violent because she failed to save him a cigarette.

The woman said Smallen awoke from a nap wanting to smoke but could not find a cigarette. After she told Smallen that she had smoked the last one earlier, he became angry and started yelling.

The woman told Smallen he needed to leave, but he responded by shoving her onto a sofa. She told Smallen to stop and fled to the bathroom, but he followed her and pushed his way in. He then grabbed the woman around the throat as she tried to escape and started choking her.

She said she became lightheaded and had trouble breathing. Carroll noticed red markings on her neck consistent with the story.

A child was present at the time of the altercation, leading to a Department of Childrens Services referral.

Smallen was charged with aggravated assault and held without bond.
