Tax Bills 2

At Monday's Lenoir City council meeting, the most exciting part of the meeting was at the beginning when the council and others spent about six minutes ragging on me for the story I wrote Monday about the late property tax bills. Several of the council members and others took turns talking about how terrible I was and how I mislead the public.

Obviously, the council and others have a reading comprehension problem.

Not only did I not accuse anyone of doing anything wrong but made it clear that there was no reason to doubt the information I had received from the city official I talked to.

Former highway superintendent and former county commission candidate, Eddie Simpson, was the most vocal of the bunch. He said it was like calling the kettle black, no idea what that meant, said I act like a child and that I will take anything and twist it around to tell a lie. Everything is all gossip and he was very disturbed that someone like me was on county commission. He finished up by saying, we all make mistakes and some day I'll have to answer for mine. That's just weird.

While I never accused anyone of doing anything wrong, I did go on to say that several Lenoir City residents had contacted me about the missing property tax bills and that they felt that the mayor/council were holding up the property tax bills due to the election. If the mayor/council are so disturbed, by what some of their constituents think, I would suggest they take it up with them. I can't control what people think. By the way, the city property tax bills have been mailed out now. Just like the city official said they would be.

Over a thousand Lenoir City residents live in the fifth district. I represent those people and when contacted with concerns and questions, It's my responsibility to help try to answer their questions. That's all I did.

Would it be unreasonable for city residents to question their elected officials actions? After all the things they've seen them do, absolutely not. The list is long and not the least of which was a 17% property tax increase just last year. Take a look at your tax bill, then go look at your utility bill. See the Rain Tax fee? See your electric, gas, water, sewer and garbage bill? All those are set by and brought to you by your mayor/council.

To the mayor, council and anyone else, call me out any time you want but at least get your facts right. I've offered this many times over the years, prove me wrong. I'll make the correction quickly.

Below is the Monday story just in case you hadn't read it. Find any where I made any accusation of any sort. Bet you can't.

Where's My Tax Bill

Many Lenoir City residents have been asking, Where's My (Property) Tax Bill.

Historically, Lenoir City property tax bills go out the first week of October. I did ask a city official why the tax bills were so late this year. According to them, the company that does the printing of the actual bills has had a printing press issue for several weeks but the tax bill should be in the mail this week. No reason to doubt this information.

However, given the perceived corruptness of some in Lenoir City government, a lot of people think the tax bills are being held up so city voters don't get hit with their ever increasing tax bills just at election time.

You'll remember, Just last year, the mayor/council raised property taxes by 17%, one of the largest property tax increases in recent history. It's easy to understand why some in Lenoir City would be suspect of their elected officials.

Guess we'll see if the tax bills make it out before the election.
