| Not much change from the last update except a few more have turned
in their petitions. I guess the biggest election news for now is,
according to election commission officials, long, long time fourth
district commissioner, Roy Bledsoe, does not intend to seek re-election.
Mr. Bledsoe has been a commissioner for going on forty-seven years.
He has also been commission chairman since 1996. Bledsoe's departure
from commission marks the second commissioner who will not seek
re-election. However, six other incumbent commissioners have not yet
filed their petitions to seek re-election. There may be more who aren't
going to run or may be considering running for a different office.
Even thought school board members do not participate in the may
primary because they run as nonpartisan, meaning no party affiliation,
January 3rd marked the first day candidates could pick up petitions to
run for a seat on the school board.
Unlike commission, only about half of the school board seats are up
for election every two years. This year it will be the even numbered
district seats. District 2, 4, 6 seats will be on the August ballot.
Candidates for school board have from January 3rd till April 3rd to file
their candidate petitions to qualify to seek office.
Incumbent school board members who's seats will be on the ballet this
year are, 2nd district seat "A" Bobby Johnson Jr. seat "B" William
Jenkins. 4th District Leroy Tate, 6th district Ric Best. Mr. Tate is the
only candidate who has picked up a petition thus far.
