Patient jailed after carjacking escape

A Lenoir City man was arrested Friday after earlier in the week escaping from the hospital, stealing a car and evading police in a high speed chase.

Lenoir City Police responded Nov. 7 in reference to a male psych patient who had fled from Fort Loudoun Medical Center wearing only a paper gown. Officers witnessed the man, who was identified by hospital staff as Christopher James McClanahan, 30, attempting to open multiple car doors in the Walmart parking lot.

McClanahan entered a vehicle before officers could get to him. A woman sitting in the passenger seat was able to get out of the vehicle before McClanahan sped off with officers at the doors trying to stop him.

The woman reported her dog was in the vehicle as well as her purse with identification, cash and credit/debit cards.

Three LCPD officers gave chase with lights and sirens activated as McClanahan exited the parking lot, made his way to U.S. Highway 321 and got onto I-75 at a high rate of speed. LCPD officers discontinued the chase at exit 76 when Loudon County Sheriff’s Office took over, but deputies were unable to catch McClanahan due to his continued excessive speed and reckless driving.

Four hours later, LCSO Deputy Bryan Talbott responded to a Lenoir City home in reference to a disturbance. He talked with a woman who said McClanahan had arrived at the residence in a vehicle she did not recognize.

After coming inside, McClanahan grabbed the woman’s purse, dumped its contents and took the keys to a car at the property. The woman told McClanahan not to take the vehicle, but he replied, “I’ll do what I want,” according to Talbott’s report.

The first stolen car was recovered at the residence with the dog and purse inside but roughly $50 and the woman’s credit card missing. The car also had front bumper damage and severe brake wear.

LCSO Deputy Robert Brockwell talked with McClanahan on Friday at the Loudon County Jail. After noticing active warrants for McClanahan, Brockwell took him into custody with no further incidence.

McClanahan was charged with two counts of capias-general sessions, carjacking, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and two counts of theft of property and held on $8,000 bond.
