The Other Election

While the deadline for the May primary election has passed, there is another election still open for new candidates. The August county general election will have four school board seats on the ballot. Unlike the county commission election, the school board seats run on staggered terms. In August, the 2nd, 4th and 6th district seats will be on the ballot.

The 2nd district has two seats on the board. Larry Proaps who holds 2nd district seat "A" has announced that he will not seek reelection. Three candidates, Lavonne Barbour, William B. Jenkins and Chris Thomas, have already picked up petitions to run for Proaps' seat. Only William Jenkins has returned his petition and qualified for the election. Bobby Johnson Jr. currently holds seat "B" and has already filed his qualifying petition for reelection.

In the 4th district current board member, Leroy Tate, has already qualified for reelection. No candidates have yet picked up to challenge Tate for his seat.

6th district school board member, Steve Harrleson, has qualified to run for County Commission in the 6th district leaving his school board seat vacant. Two candidates have already qualified for the 6th district board seat. Christie Allen Kreischer and Keva Largent will be on the August ballot.

Also on the August ballot will be the 21st State Representative seat currently held by Jimmy Matlock and the 32nd State Representative seat currently held Dennis Ferguson. Julia C. Hurley has already qualified to challenge Ferguson.

Candidates wishing to run for a school board seat or State Representative have until April 1st, 12 noon to file their qualifying petitions.
