Officers discover illegal mushrooms

Two men are facing charges after driving up to a Loudon motel.

While the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the 7th Judicial Drug Task Force at a motel off Highway 72, investigators noticed a gray Ford Mustang, with three individuals inside, pull into the parking lot. The front seat passenger, William Joshua Russell, exited the vehicle and came to the room investigators were searching.

While speaking with Russell, agents met Joshua Jared Redford, who had his window rolled down and a large knife in his lap.

“Redford reached for the knife and both Redford and a passenger were taken out of the Mustang at gunpoint and detained due to (a) deadly weapon located in the driver’s lap,” Robert Stanley, LCSO deputy, wrote in a report.

After a K9 was deployed on the scene, officers found 36.9 grams of suspected psilocybin mushrooms and a Bryco 38 .380-caliber pistol with one round in the chamber and one round in the magazine close to the front passenger floorboard. Officers also found three sets of digital scales, 75 small baggies, two spoons with residue and 32 syringes in a black backpack and brown backpack in the back seat.

Russell claimed responsibility for the items. Both Russell and Redford were arrested for active warrants in Anderson County.
Russell, 33, Clinton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, manufacture, sell, delivery or resale of a Schedule I substance and possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony and held on $72,500 bond.

Redford, 28, Shelbyville, was charged with assisting other agency and released without bond.
