New High School?

Looks like the Loudon County Board of Education is on the verge of buying land that could some day, not so far away, be a new county high school on the upper end of the county. The new school would likely be a grade 7-12. This would be the first new high school added in the county school system in more than a hundred years.

The BOE is currently in discussions to buy a thirty-two acre parcel and another six acre parcel from Lenoir City's First Baptist Church on Simpson Road. The BOE has been looking for suitable land for the new school for several months. The First Baptist property is at the top of the list of possible sites due to location, availably of sewer and adequate water supply and access to Hwy 11. Above is a preliminary drawing of how the property could be developed.

The BOE is currently waiting on an engineering feasibility report before making a final decision and the church is set to vote on the sale of the property on October 9th.

The engineering/architect firm will be at the school board workshop on Thursday, October 6th, to present their report on the feasibility study. The church will hold a presentation for church members on the property sale on Wednesday October 5th, 6:00 pm and then another question and answer time on Saturday October 8th, 9:00 am in Fellowship Hall A.

Loudon County currently has two high schools, Loudon High School and Greenback High School. Lenoir City has the one high school.

The idea of an upper end county high school has been knocked around for many years, but now with the unprecedented growth in the county, the county school board will have to take some action to house the influx of kids. Most of the growth brought to us by Lenoir City's, out of control, over development.

Be aware, a new high school will be very expensive and it will require a property tax increase to build and operate it.

We should know more of the plans after this week.
