Maryville named one of Tennessee's top 20 safest cities

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- SafeWise, a review and research site on security matters, recently released a report on the top 20 safest cities in Tennessee. Two local areas made the cut: Maryville and Loudon.

According to the report, Loudon is the seventh safest city, while Maryville is 17th.

The report said that, in Tennessee's safest areas, there were fewer than two incidents of violent crime per 1,000; however, the report claimed that the "state doesn't do as well over all. Tennessee's statewide violent crime rate of 9.07 is double the national rate."

While Maryville and Loudon got into the top 20, many other area cities did not. Oliver Springs ranked 30th, Sevierville ranked 59th, Gatlinburg ranked 89th, Pigeon Forge was ranked 94th, Dandridge ranked 39 and Newport ranked 122.

Knoxville, notably, did not rank in the top 124 safest cities, but Memphis did, ranking at 124.

The report said the Volunteer State's "biggest concern" was property crime with violent crime coming in as a second priority.
