Death reported in Loudon County crash involving car, bicycle

LOUDON, Tenn. (WATE) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly accident Friday afternoon involving a car and a bicycle.

The crash was reported on Highway 11 near Simmons Road in Loudon County. 

According to the THP report, David Abney was driving northbound on Highway 11 and was on his cellphone when he drove outside the lane of travel and hit a bicyclist. 

Cletus McCurry was riding the bicycle and died from his injuries.

According to the report, McCurry had been drinking and was not wearing a helmet. Abney did have drugs in his system at the time of the crash. Criminal charges are pending for Abney. 


Man on bicycle killed in Anderson County crash

OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. (WATE) - A bicyclist was killed Sunday night in Anderson County when his bicycle was hit by a car.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says a 2004 Toyota Camry was going east on Mahoney Road near Pappy Lane while Homer McElroy, Jr., 72, was going west.

THP says McElroy was traveling near the center line and was hit by the Camry. McElroy ended up off the road. 

The driver of the Camry was not hurt. No charges are expected to be filed.
