Man charged with drugs, contraband

A Loudon man was taken to Loudon County Jail this past week after police stopped his vehicle for swerving in the early morning hours along Highway 11.

Noticing a silver Honda Civic cross the center line multiple times as it was traveling 20 mph in a 45 mph zone, Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Blake Garland stopped the driver, Daniel Lee Ernest, 30, Loudon, at a gas station on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the arrest report.

“Once in contact with the defendant, he did appear to be very nervous and did lack control of motor skills,” Garland wrote in the report.
A check through dispatch revealed that Ernest’s license was revoked.

“The defendant did consent to a search of the vehicle, which nothing was located, and also consented to field sobriety testing,” Garland wrote in his report.
Ernest was taken into custody and asked multiple times if he had any narcotics. Ernest told deputies that he did not have any drugs.

During a search at the jail, police found a small baggie with white powder believed to be methamphetamine, half of a Suboxone strip and a another baggie containing less than 1 gram of a leafy substance believed to be marijuana in Ernest’s right sock.

Ernest was charged with driving on a revoked/suspended license, three counts of simple possession/casual exchange and contraband in a penal institution and held without bond.

A homeless teenager was taken to Loudon County Jail for allegedly setting fire to an outbuilding at a residence in Loudon.

According to a Loudon Police Department arrest report, Mark Anthony Stevens, 18, homeless, visited a home Sept. 28 in the 900 block of Rosedale Avenue in Loudon and "did knowingly set fire to and destroy an out building and its contents ..."

Police estimated the value of the contents in the building was $5,000. Stevens was accompanied by a 13-year-old, who told police that Stevens started the fire, according to the report.

During an interview, Stevens told police that he was at the scene of the blaze, did not tell anyone about the fire, shut the door on the building while it was on fire and "ran away," according to the arrest report. "He went on to state that it wasn't his problem," according to the report.

Stevens was charged with arson and contributing to the delinquency of a minor and held on $16,000 bond.
