A 79-year-old Greenback man was killed after his truck crashed into another vehicle Sunday evening on U.S. 411 South.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Carey Hixson said the accident occurred at 5:47 p.m. on U.S. 411 South at Dotson Road, across from Pope's Plant Farm. The area is just past the Blount County line in Loudon County.

J.E. Bales, 79, Niles Ferry Road, Greenback, was driving a Dodge pickup truck southbound on U.S. 411 South and traveled into the center turn lane to make a left turn on Dotson Road, Hixson said.

Hixson said Kami L. Bowden, 27, Knoxville, was traveling northbound in the left lane of the highway. According to Bowden and other witnesses, Bales failed to yield the right of way when turning onto Dotson Road.

"He turned in front of her and she struck him," Hixson said.

Bales was taken by Lifestar helicopter to University of Tennessee Medical Center and was in critical condition upon leaving the scene. THP dispatchers later confirmed that Bales had died following the crash. Bowden was taken by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service to Blount Memorial Hospital with possible injuries.

Greenback volunteer firefighters and Loudon County Sheriff's deputies assisted at the accident scene.
