LOCO Mess

Saturday's Run LOCO was, as you can imagine, quite the mess as could be expected when several main county roads are shut down for up to six hours. My phone started ringing shortly before 7:00 am with complaints. I'm sure the joggers that participated had fun and I imagine the Education Foundation raised some money. But at what cost?

What is forgotten by some is, that not everyone has that 9-5, five day a week job. Some folks have to work on Saturdays. Some have businesses that are open on Saturdays and they depend on Saturday business to help pay the bills. Some folks just have places they need to get to on and things to do Saturdays since that's the only day they have off. But apparently those people are not important.

There's really no reason the Foundation can't have their fund raiser and yet not disrupt the lives of thousands of people. There are roads in the county that could accommodate the runners without stopping all traffic. The runners could run from Anderson County to Blount County on 321's shoulder without disrupting traffic. They could run Hwy.72, the same way. I still think the interstate would be the best choice.

If the Education Foundation has plans to do this every year, they'd be well served to find better, more appropriate routs for the joggers. Shutting down so many major roads is just not acceptable to so many.

It's just not necessary.

Loudon County Government had no contact or involvement with the Run LOCO event.
