Lenoir City Schools updating security efforts

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Lenoir City community plans to meet for the first time in early March for a task force on school safety. Schools Director Jeanne Barker, EdD, said the task force will include students, teachers, law enforcement and city leaders.

Barker said the school already has multiple levels of security measures in place, including an excellent relationship with the local police department.

"We have officers that are constantly patrolling our areas around our schools," she said. "We have SROs in our schools. We have direct link to the Lenoir City Police Department. Every principal and here at central office has a radio that is directly connected to the police department. So in an instance, we can have multiple uniformed officers as well as plain clothed officers available to us."

The head of security for the school system, Mike Sims with Support Services, said, "We have just put in the budget, we will have a third SRO that will be stationed at our elementary school permanently rather than the SRO being there part-time."
