Leave'em Alone

I seem to be having a problem with my Vote No On Sales Tax Increase Signs. I put them out and they disappear and magically show up at Lenoir City City Hall behind the mechanical fence. It's the darnedest thing.

Truth of the matter is, I know exactly what's happening to them. They're being picked up by Lenoir City's codes enforcement officer. What I don't understand is, why.

A couple months ago, Lenoir City council passed an ordinance that prohibits certain political signs on city property and right-of-ways. Even though I disagree with it, I understand it and have tried to comply with the new regulation. I've tried to put my signs on non city property and right-of-ways including the north or right side of Harrison Road. The Harrison Road signs are the ones that keep getting pulled up.

I've explained to the codes officer and the street superintendent that the north or right side of Harrison Road is in the county based on the city's own ordinance annexing Harrison road into the city a year ago or so. The ordinance states that the city annexed the right-of-way of Harrison Road. That says to me, they annexed the road it's self. The ordinance does not say the city annexed Harrison Road and it's right-of-way.

I have also tried to explain to city officials that their new ordinance prohibiting certain political signs on city property and right-of-ways does not apply to my signs or any signs promoting or opposing a measure or a cause. Read the definition of Public Election Signs from the city's own ordinance.

Public Election Sign means any sign which is used for promoting general information relative to a public office election. Signs under this definition shall comply with the following:

Clearly, a sign opposing a sales tax increase on the ballot or for that matter supporting it, in no way, could be defined as a sign which is used for "promoting general information relative to a public office election". A referendum on a measure or cause is not a public office election.

So, from now to the November 6th election, leave my signs alone, please and thank you.
