Knox man jailed on kidnapping charges

A Knoxville man was arrested on drug, assault and kidnapping charges Sunday following an encounter with a Lenoir City man.

Lenoir City Police Officer Riley Miller stopped a Kia on U.S. Highway 321 because the driver and passengers weren’t wearing seat belts. Miller talked with driver and car owner Casandra Danielle Baker, 25, Luttrell, passenger Shawn Michael Baker, 26, Knoxville, and another man in the back seat.

When Miller approached the car, he could smell marijuana and asked Casandra if she had smoked in the vehicle. She told him she hadn’t that day. Miller then had everyone exit the car for a search, according to a report.

When conducting a pat down on Shawn, he found 14.3 grams of marijuana, a digital scale and $247. In the car, Miller also found a digital scale, two small baggies of 6.3 grams marijuana, a baggie with 0.7 grams of cocaine, a cut straw with powder residue on it, six marijuana roaches, a grinder, an open bottle of Cognac and a black Springfield XD-9 9mm handgun. Shawn said the marijuana, scales, roaches and open container were his. Casandra claimed the grinder.

During the stop, dispatch put out a call of a possible kidnapping in Lenoir City of a man with the same name as the third passenger in the car. Miller spoke to the man separately, who had a bloody nose from being struck in the face. He also had lacerations on his nose and bruises on his cheek.

The man told Miller he and a friend met Shawn in Knoxville to buy marijuana. The man said the friend approached Shawn, who was sitting in the car, and saw his friend reach in the car to take a gun sitting on Shawn’s lap. The friend then took off on foot.
The man said he had no idea what was going on, but Shawn held him at gunpoint and told him he wasn’t going anywhere until they found the man’s friend. Shawn then “pistol whipped” the man, striking his nose. The man got in the car with Casandra and Shawn and the trio went to Lenoir City to search for the friend, Miller wrote in a report.
Casandra was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and released on $2,000 bond.
Shawn was charged with aggravated assault, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, manufacture, sale, delivery, resale of a Schedule VI substance, simple possession/casual exchange and possession of drug paraphernalia and held on $94,000 bond.

Man aids runaway

A Lenoir City man was arrested March 2 after hiding a minor who had fled from state custody.

LCPD Officer Andrew Lee responded to a home on Pine Top Street in an attempt to locate the 17-year-old girl. About four hours later, Lee was notified a green Ford Aerostar van had been stopped by Oak Ridge Police Department and had the girl inside, according to a report.

Bruce Winfred Jenkins, 65, said the girl “told him she would be in the state’s custody until she was 19 but if she could escape the state’s custody until she turned 18 she would only have to serve a few days in jail and then be on her own,” Lee wrote in a report.
Based on Jenkins picking the girl up and statements he made, Lee determined Jenkins knew the girl was in state custody.
Jenkins was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and harboring or hiding a runaway child and released on $2,000 bond.
