Knox Co. deputies identify man shot trying to break into

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knox County deputies have identified a man they say broke into a home and was fatally shot.

The homeowner says James Melvin Vinson, 40, broke a window and was trying to crawl inside when the shooting occurred.

"The homeowner had a Glock firearm in his hand. He fired off one round," Knox County spokesperson Martha Dooley says.

Dooley says that single shot killed Vinson. Authorities aren't releasing where Vinson was shot.

"When he was shot, he fell out of the window, onto the front porch," Dooley says.

Vinson had two warrants out on him at the time. One was for a violation of probation from a previous aggravated armed burglary charge.

He was also wanted out of Loudon County for aggravated armed burglary, vandalism and theft.
