Just Can't Win

Last week there was an incident at North Middle School. Apparently, a heat system had a failure of some sort. In the beginning and for some time later, no one knew exactly what the problem was but school administrators had enough concern to take actions to get students out of possible danger. It might have been a gas leak or a carbon monoxide issue no one knew. Out of an abundance of caution, administrators took swift action to remove all the NMS students to Eatons where it was determined that the issue at NMS would take some time to be repaired. Ultimately, the decision was made to dismiss the NMS students early since they couldn't go back to their building.

Much later, it was determined that a gas heater in the gym had malfunctioned and was causing the problem. It was repaired and students returned the next morning.

Here's the problem. With in minutes of the evacuation from one school to the other, the social media warriors were hard at work criticizing the actions of the school administrators. Many were upset that more information wasn't available sooner. The fact is, administrators didn't know for a long time what the issue was or if the students would be able to return to class or not. How could they possibly have given out information they didn't know?

Was the whole thing a mess, sure it was. Was it an inconvenience for a lot of people, sure it was. Did school officials inform parents of what happened after they knew themselves, sure they did.

School officials and administrators should be applauded for taking swift actions for the safety of the students rather than being criticized for not not providing information they didn't have.

Are there going to be issues and instances arise at the schools from time to time that cause problems and inconveniences, absolutely. It was that way when I was in school, it was that way when my kids were in school and it's still that way today.

I personally believe that every employee of the Loudon County school system is doing the very best job they can and have the best interest of the students in mind at all times.
