Illegal Annexation
| At the last Lenoir City council meeting, the council
voted for an illegal annexation. The 23 acre parcel is well outside the
city's UGB, Urban Growth Boundary. The property is on the north side of
Hwy. 70, just across from Mealer Road. The annexation is a violation of state law, Public Chapter 1101, and is a violation of the court approved inter-local agreement between the city and the county. I had this issue on the last commission workshop for discussion. It was decided that the first course of action would be for county mayor, Buddy Bradshaw, to discuss the matter with Lenoir city mayor, Tony Aikens, to find out if they understand the annexation is illegal then report back to commission. If this is allowed to stand, I'm sure we can expect the city to go on an annexation binge outside their jurisdiction.
