Harrelson Takes Post

Steve Harrelson And wife, Ruthie, Judge Hank Sledge

Former Loudon County commissioner, Steve Harrelson, was appointed to the vacant Circuit/General Sessions Court position at Monday's commission meeting. The position became vacant when incumbent clerk, Lisa Niles, resigned to take the Chancery Court Clerk And Master position.

Five individuals had expressed interest in the position that is appointed by the commission. Lisa Bridges, Penny Glasgow, Judy Hines, Steve Harrelson and Laura Standridge addressed the commission at the last workshop expressing an interest to be appointed to the job. A sixth candidate asked to be considered at Monday's meeting. Megan Bright of Lenoir City, put her name in for possible nomination.

At the beginning of the meeting, Lisa Bridges asked that her name be removed from consideration leaving five candidates. At the time for nominations, 4th district commissioner, Gary Whitfield, nominated Laura Standridge, 2nd District commissioner, Julia Hurley, nominated Megan Bright, 3rd district commissioner, Bill Satterfield, nominated Penny Glasgow and 2nd district commissioner, Matthew Tinker, nominated Steve Harrelson. At this, nominations ceased.

Commission Chairman, Henry Cullen, called for a roll call vote where each commissioner voted for a candidate by name. Commissioners Kelly Brewster, David Meers and Gary Whitfield voted for Ms. Standridge, Commissioner Bill Satterfield voted for Ms. Glasgow. Commissioners Julia Hurley, Matthew Tinker, Harold Duff, myself, Adam Waller and Henry Cullen voted for Mr. Harrelson. Where as chairman Cullen announced that Harrelson had received the majority vote (6) needed to win the spot.

Harrelson, who is currently the Director of the Lenoir City Parks And Recreation department and has been for 31 years, assumed the new position Tuesday morning after being administered the oath of office by General Sessions Judge Hank Sledge. No replacement has been named Harrelson's Parks & Rec position as of yet. 

This appointment is only temporary until the next county, general election which will be August of 2020 with the primary being March of 2020.
