Greenback’s management team has followed the project’s schedule, which runs from the school’s pre-engineered area westward to the two-story classroom wing, Bosse said.

Masons recently completed their scope of work. Workers are applying finishes in the pre-engineered area, Bosse said. They are close to applying finishes in the elementary school’s wings and should complete heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) work by the month’s end.

Crews will soon pour nine concrete circles in the courtyard between the K-2 and grades 3-5 wings, Bosse said. They will later cure the concrete, label each circle with a planet’s name and stain each circle the perceived color of its corresponding planet. Educators will use the area to teach about the solar system.

Workers have started to “dry in” the two-story classroom wing with completed roofing, brick, exterior doors and windows, he said. They also received the rotunda’s windows earlier this week.

For the next 30 days, crews are concentrating their efforts on site roadways and site utilities, Bosse said. Permanent power has been available for the past month.

Workers are also working on the school’s bus canopy and should complete the canopy’s decking within the next couple weeks.

Crews should complete required mill work in September, Bosse said. They should install the school’s gym floor in early fall.

School officials are pleased with the project team’s work to date.

“They’ve done a good job,” said Phil Moffett, who represents Greenback on the Loudon County Board of Education. “Schools are the lifeblood of each community, and a new Greenback School is a big thing for our community. It’s going to take us to the next level.”

“We’re excited to start the new school year,” said Principal Mike Casteel. “We’re especially excited for the entire Greenback community, as they get the opportunity to see and experience the new facility.”

The new Greenback School is 145,300 square feet and located on a 27.9-acre site adjacent to the current school. The Pre-K-12 school has a core capacity of 900 students.

In comparison, the current building is 78,440 square feet and located on a 15.5-acre site. The existing school’s basic structure was built in 1939, and additions were completed in 1950, 1960, 1977, 1989, 1998 and 2000.

The new Greenback School will feature:

• 20 elementary classrooms;

• Eight middle school classrooms and one science lab;

• Eight high school classrooms and one science lab;

• Three computer labs;

• Three vocational shops and classrooms;

• One room for art, band and music;

• Gym with 1,022-person seating capacity;

• 6,834-square-foot dining room;

• 4,133 square feet of multipurpose assembly space;

• 2,963-square-foot media center;

• One new athletic practice field, which will be used in addition to existing fields.

Currently, the new Greenback School is on budget.
