First Meeting

Greenback Mayor Dewayne Birchfield

For the first time in 44 years, a new mayor sat at the head of the table for the first meeting of the new Greenback mayor and aldermen meeting. A large crowd of fifty to sixty folks were in attendance.

The first order of business was to swear in the three returning aldermen, Johnny Walker, Robin Blankenship and Delmar Davis. They were all sworn in at the same time by Mayor Birchfield. The fourth alderman, Polly Evans had already resigned.

The next order of business was to appoint a replacement for Ms. Evan's vacant seat. The mayor nominated former alderman, Linda Black. His nomination was seconded by Walker. On a voice vote, all voted in favor except Robin Blankenship, former mayor Tom Peeler's daughter. The mayor then swore in Ms. Black.

A number of housecleaning issues were discussed and a number of citizens spoke to to the council on various issues.

The final topic to be discussed was the city land that had been given to the fire department by the former mayor. The city attorney was in attendance to point out that there were several problems with the quit claim deed giving the property to the fire department. Not the least of which was, the former mayor signed the quit claim after he had left office. The mayor made the motion to take any action needed to reclaim the property. His motion was seconded by Walker. On a voice vote, all voted in favor except Robin Blankenship, former mayor Tom Peeler's daughter.

Over all, the meeting went pretty smoothly given all the circumstances that have gone on. Mayor Birchfield and the aldermen/women still have challenges in front of them but working together, they can make Greenback better and better.
