Financial dispute evolves into assault

A Lenoir City man was arrested May 25 and charged with domestic assault and false imprisonment after a dispute over financial matters escalated.

Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Luke Hawkins responded after a 911 caller said they observed a man holding a woman down against the rear of a vehicle by pressing his forearm to her neck.

When Hawkins arrived, he talked with the woman, who told Hawkins that she and Jonathan Michael Cook, 33, had been arguing about money missing from their joint bank account.

The woman said when she tried to leave the residence, Cook became angry and violent. He grabbed her by the neck and pinned her to the bed, refusing to let her leave. The woman pushed him off and ran outside, where Cook caught up to her and grabbed her by the waist. He then pinned her against the car with his forearm to her neck.

Cook denied the allegations, although he admitted to other deputies he was trying to stop her from leaving, according to the report filed by Hawkins. When talking to Hawkins, Cook said he had not been trying to stop her from leaving but was looking to hug her to calm her down.

Hawkins reported he saw a scratch and red irritated skin on the woman’s neck and red irritated skin on Cook’s right forearm, which was consistent with the woman’s version of events.

Cook was charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment and released on $7,000 bond.
