Expensive In Greenback

Kind of under the radar for most of us, the Greenback election this time had it's share of high drama. Ultimately, social media may have been the undoing of a 44 year incumbent mayor.

There are about 585 registered voters in the city. About 400 of them voted in this election. Probably wasn't the best idea to make about half those mad by making attacks on Facebook, but that's what seemed to have happened when some of the, now former mayor, Tom Peeler's, family took to Facebook. But that's all said and done now.

This is a story about how government is not suppose to work. Just before the election, October 25 I think it was, a Greenback resident put in a public request for certain public records. Not a complicated or unreasonable request, just documents pertaining to city operations. 11 days later, the day before the election, the citizen received the reply from now former mayor, Tom Peeler.

According to Peeler, the request would generate 139 copies, at fifteen cents per page, the cost would be $20.85. But there would also be a $15.00 and $20.00 per hour labor charge to put together the requested documents. Estimated time needed to compile those documents, 20 hours. Total cost in labor, $340.00 plus the copy fees of $20.85. Total cost of request, $360.85, paid in cash, in advanced.

This is the kind of stuff that gets politicians defeated and should.

We work for the people, not the other way around.
