Disturbing Facts

One of the great attributes of our country is that we take care of those in need. Between Federal, State and local governments there are literally hundreds of social programs funded with tax payer dollars to assure that those who are truly in need are taken care of.

The idea being, a hand up not a hand out. Unfortunately, it appears that our society has devolved to a point that we now have an awful lot of people who have learned to game the system. The entitlement society has arrived.

Below is a link to the states web site that gives a 10 year statistical report by county on the issuance of food stamps and it's disturbing. In 10 years Loudon County recipients alone has increased by more than 4600 to a total of 7148 individuals who receive food stamps. That's nearly one sixth of the county's population. In dollars it has gone from $178,770.00 per month in 2001 to $920,457.00 per month in 2011.

In January 2011, Tennessee issued $169,427,929.00 in food stamps. That's just one month.

Undoubtedly, there are those in our county who are in need but it's hard to believe all these are legitimate. Anyway, as we all struggle in these tough economic times, it's good to know where our tax dollars are going.
