Coaches Leaving

Jeff Harig introduced as West head coach

The defending 5A state champion West Rebels have a new head coach.

Jeff Harig was announced as the new head man at West on Friday morning.

"I've watched some film of West last year. I know the athleticism is here," Harig said.

"I know the ablility to run the football is here on defense so you're going to continue to see that. My philosophy is a little different than the previous coach. But at the end of the day you want to get the ball to your best players and you want to be able to get your best players on the field and get them free to run to the football and so that's going to be our style."

Harig previously spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Loudon, compiling an 80-59 record. The Redskins reached the playoffs eight times under Harig including last season when Loudon started 13-0 for the first time in school history. The Redskins lost to eventual champion Fulton in the 4A state semifinals.

Harig takes over for Scott Cummings who guided the West football program for 13 seasons. Cummings coached the Rebels to the program's first state championship game appearance in 2013 and then led West to its first state title in 2014.

Cummings departed in January to take the head coaching position at Cleveland High School.

During a phone interview Friday afternoon, Lenoir City Athletic Director Greg Boling confirmed that head girls basketball coach Rebecca Muncy has resigned her position.

Muncy was in her third season as a coach with the team, her first as the head coach.

Boling said the school has no timetable for seeking a replacement at this time. Muncy's replacement will be the team’s fifth head coach since Joe Lee left the team in 2010 after coaching the Lady Panthers for the previous 29 years.
