Budget 2020-2021

It's budget time. The Loudon County Commission, budget committee, has already had several meetings to work on the 2020-2021 budget. No doubt, this year's budget may be the most challenging commissioners have ever had to deal with given the recent developments around the Chinese Coronovirus mess. All local governments will be facing some serious revenue shortfalls from the country shutdown. I read where Nashville is looking at a possible 35% property tax increase. Hopefully, Loudon County will be in better shape than Nashville.

The county could well see hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue decreases from sales tax, hotel/motel taxes, court costs & fines and lost revenues from the court clerks office from vehicle registrations, tags and renewals. It's going to be a challenging year to say the least.

Two of the most important issues for the commission is to avoid any property tax increase, if at all possible, and we always try to approve county employees at least a 2% raise. This may be a challenge this year.

Several departments have submitted budgets with big increases and additional personal. One elected official requested a $5,000 raise for himself. That would be on top of his current $94,000.00 salary.

The budget committee will continue meeting through May and June to come up with a budget we can all live with, hopefully.
