51 Years Old

In 1971 when I was in the 7th grade, for Arbor Day, every student was allowed to take home 24 Loblolly Pine saplings. They were wrapped in wet, brown hand towels that we used in those days.

I brought home my 24 saplings and planted them along our property line. Over the years, most of them suffered some form of death. Ultimately, only two survived. Boy did they survive. They had reached the height of around 85 feet.

My sister now lives in our childhood home. She decided it was time to take them down. Arrangements were made and last week the big pines came down. It was kind of sad to see them go, but that's the way it goes.
